G&A costs
General and administrative costs.
Galley proof
An advanced finished copy of a document, generally used internally or sent to reviewers. Also called checker, slip proof.
Gantt chart
A graphical display of related information that uses time lines and other symbols to illustrate multiple time-based activities or projects on a horizontal time scale. See also plot types.
Gap analysis
A study of the differences between two different information systems or applications, often for the purpose of determining how to get from one state to a new state. A gap is sometimes spoken of as “the area between where we are and where we want to be” or the area between as-is and to-be. Gap analysis is undertaken as a means of bridging that space.

Gateway page
A web site’s subpage that is intended for a specific audience. See also landing page.
Gating
A methodology for limiting opportunities for deviation from the proven steps in a process. See also exit criteria, phase gate.
General and administrative costs (G&A)
Expenses for general management and administration; for example, insurance and legal fees. See also cost types.
Genre
A document category that has a particular content, form, or style.
Genre analysis
Placing a document within social and textual contexts.
GERT
Graphical evaluation and review technique.
GIF
Graphics interchange file format. A bitmap image format that supports animations and simple graphics with up to 256 colors. See also bitmap graphics file formats.
Glass-box testing

Globalization
Creating products and services for the demands of a global market. See also glocalization, internationalization, localization.
Glocalization
A combination of globalization and localization that creates products and services for the demands of a global market while recognizing regional/local demands. See also globalization, internationalization, localization.

Glow
Highlight surrounding an image.
Go/no-go decision
A major decision point in the project life cycle that allows the decision maker(s) to decide whether to continue, change, or end an activity or project.
Gopher
A menu-driven system for searching and retrieving files from the web.
Gradient
A gradual transition of colors.
Grain direction
The predominant direction in which paper fibers align. See also against the grain, with the grain.
Grammar
A system of rules that define the structure of a language.
Grant
Funds given for a specific purpose.
Granularity
The relative level of detail, depth of penetration, scale, or size of an object or activity.
Graph
See plot.
Graphic arts
Designing and printing on paper and other substrates.
Graphic design
The arrangement of type, visual elements, and specifications to convey a visual message.
Graphical evaluation and review technique (GERT)
A network analysis technique that allows for conditional and probabilistic treatment of logical relationships (that is, some activities may not be performed).
Graphical user interface (GUI)
An icon-based user interface to a system. See also user interface.
Graphics
Visual elements that make printed messages more clear, more interesting, or more understandable. See also bitmap graphics, vector graphics.
Gravure
A printing method that uses metal cylinders etched with millions of tiny ink wells.
Gray-box testing
A combination of black-box and white-box testing methodologies which involves testing a piece of software against its specifications but also uses some knowledge of its internal workings.
Grayscale
A graphic image that appears to be black, white, and shades of gray, but that only uses a single color of ink.
Greeking

Green belt
An individual who has been trained in the Six Sigma methodology and tools, and who leads a process or quality improvement team as part of their duties. See also black belt, yellow belt.
Grounded theory
Research that looks for issues that emerge repeatedly from the data and which generates, tests, and amends theories. See also research methods.
Group-based instruction
Learning activities and materials used in interactive, group-paced instruction.
Groupblog
A blog with multiple contributors. See also blog types.
Group knowledge
Knowledge, beliefs, or opinions shared by multiple individuals. See also knowledge.
Groupthink
A mode of thinking in which group members place solidarity and cohesiveness above honestly appraising alternatives.
GUI
Gutter
The combination of the inside margins of two facing pages. See also alley.
