Design Theory Annotated Bibliography

Buchanan, Richard. “Design and the New Rhetoric: Productive Arts in the Philosophy of Culture.” Philosophy and Rhetoric: 2001. 34.3. MLA International Bibliography.
This article explores the evolution of design rhetoric over time, starting with theories from the Renaissance and how such theories would function applied to the current state of rhetoric.  We used this source to discuss how design has become more theoretical, dividing it into a tangible versus intangible state.

Ehses, Hanno and Ellen Lupton. Rhetorical Handbook: An Illustrated Manuel for Graphic Designers, 1988. Web. 4 Mar. 2010.
The authors of this book are interested in the relationship between design and the ethos, logos, and pathos of rhetoric. The ethical appeal addresses the moral and aesthetic value of the audience and evokes feelings of trust and respect. The emotional appeal evokes feelings of passion and spirituality. With respect to our project, this site will be helpful in analyzing design rhetoric in terms of the feelings they evoke for the consumer/audience.

Johnson, Robert J. “When All Else Fails, Use the Instructions: Local Knowledge, Negotiation, and the Construction of User-Centered Computer Documentation.” Professional Writing and Rhetoric. Ed. Tim Peeples. New York: Addison Wesley, 2003. 287-316.
This source focuses on computer documentation, specifically instructions for software.  But with respect to our wiki, we incorporate the author’s model of user-centered design, discussing the pro’s of the approach.

Joost, Gesche and Arne Scheuerman.“Design as Rhetoric: Basic Principles for Design Research.” Design Research Network, 2007. Web. 4 Mar. 2010.
In this article the authors explain that the design process can be explained according to rhetorical criteria. Since theory and practice (of design rhetoric) are entwined, exact knowledge of reoccurring design methods are integral to optimizing design progress. For the purpose of our wiki, we will combine theory and practice to explain the effectiveness of design rhetoric.
