Responsibilities and Skills

A content management specialist (CMS) is responsible for establishing a company’s presence on the World Wide Web. The CMS writes, proofreads, and edits the information of the website and ensures that it is valid and up to date. Additionally, the CMS must promote the website through newsletters and various other outreach methods that the CMS is responsible for developing. The CMS collaborates with the employees throughout the different departments of the company to ascertain the most reliable and relevant information. It is imperative for the CMS to keep up with new technology, designs, and outreach methods to constantly improve the site.

Experience Needed

A CMS must be able to collaborate with individuals across the company and demonstrate leadership in teamwork, creativity, and decision-making. A CMS should be familiar with website publishing and design software, content management software as well as coding languages such as XML, HTML, and JavaScript. It is necessary to have some design experience, as well as basic knowledge of Adobe Photoshop and Microsoft Publisher. A CMS will handle all facets of the website, therefore, organizational and multitasking skills are required. A bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, computer science, marketing, public relations, or technical writing is recommended.

In today’s workplace, when it comes to deciding how to manage online and offline content, some companies hire people from within to be a CMS and others use third-party companies to reach their goals.

A CMS requires much time and skill from the individual, however, as one grows in experience, his or her salary reflects it. A CMS typically makes between $60,000 and $110,000 a year. The average core compensation is $84,000, but the total compensation rises to $121,000 when benefits are considered.
